What we handle before you retire

The last working years decide how much of your savings you keep. This is the work we do with you.

  1. 01

    Your retirement number

Spending, minus Social Security and any pension, is what savings must cover. On the 4% rule, a $75,000 yearly gap points to about $1.875 million. We test it against lower returns and higher costs.

  2. 02

    Catch-up contributions

At 50 you can add $8,000 to a 401(k), or $11,250 at 60 to 63. If last year’s wages from that employer topped $150,000, catch-ups must go in as Roth.

  3. 03

    Roth conversions

The years between retiring and starting Social Security or required distributions are often the cheapest time to convert. We size each conversion to the bracket you want to fill.

  4. 04

    Withdrawal order

Taxable, then tax-deferred, then Roth is a default, not a plan. We draw from accounts in the order that keeps your lifetime tax bill and your Medicare premiums lower.

  5. 05

    Social Security timing

Each year you delay past full retirement age, up to 70, raises your benefit by 8%. We compare claiming ages against your health, your spouse and your other income.

  6. 06

    Required distributions

RMDs start at 73, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later, and each is taxed as income. The RMD calculator estimates yours; your CPA plans the bracket it lands in.

How Nino helps you retire

Retirement is a tax plan as much as a savings plan. On an Advisor plan your financial planner builds the retirement projection and your CPA plans the withdrawals, conversions and returns that follow from it, working from the same accounts.

  • A retirement plan in your first two weeks

Your financial planner and CPA map spending, income start dates and account balances into one plan, then revisit it every quarter as markets and dates change.

  • Returns that match the plan

Your CPA prepares and files your federal and state returns, so a conversion or an RMD planned in the summer is reported the way it was planned. Nothing is filed until you approve it.

  • Scenarios in the software

Nino’s AI software reads your connected accounts and lets you test a different retirement date, more spending or lower returns, and see how much room is left. Projections are not promises.

What decides whether a retirement plan holds?

Five risks to test any plan against before you give notice.

A bad market early

Losses in the first years of retirement hurt most, because you are selling to spend. Holding one to two years of spending in cash or short-term bonds avoids selling low.

Healthcare before Medicare

Retire before 65 and you buy coverage yourself until Medicare. Budget the premiums and out-of-pocket costs, and note that Medicare enrollment runs on a seven-month window.

Taxes on withdrawals

Traditional withdrawals are income, and higher income can raise Medicare premiums. A large traditional balance can push RMDs into a higher bracket than you had while working.

Living longer than planned

Plan to 95, not to average life expectancy, and allow for inflation: at 3% a year, costs double in about 24 years.

Missing an RMD

A missed required distribution costs 25% of the amount not taken, or 10% if corrected in time. Your team tracks the deadline each December.
